Why choose the PowerBass XL-1040TD?
The XL-1040TD takes the already capable XL-1040T shallow subwoofer and adds a dual voice coil — two independent 4-ohm windings that give you real flexibility when matching to an amplifier. Wire the coils in parallel for a 2-ohm load and squeeze maximum power from a mono amp; wire them in series for an 8-ohm load if your amp prefers higher impedance. That wiring flexibility alone makes the XL-1040TD the more versatile choice for most custom installs.
- Dual 4-ohm voice coils — wire in parallel (2Ω) to pull maximum wattage from your amplifier, or in series (8Ω) for a stable load on higher-impedance amps. One subwoofer, two genuine wiring options.
- Shallow by design, not by compromise — an inverted ferrite magnet trims nearly two inches from the overall depth compared with the standard XL, while the basket, cone, and power rating stay identical.
- Flat cone for flat response — the proprietary injection-moulded polypropylene cone produces accurate, detailed bass rather than exaggerated low-end that sounds impressive in a showroom but exhausting on a long drive.
- Stays composed at high volume — perimeter aero-vent cooling vents and a 2″ vented KSV voice coil former actively manage heat, protecting the driver when you push it hard.
- Quiet, non-resonant basket — the polycarbonate/glass fibre turbine-style basket doesn’t add its own note to the mix, keeping the sound clean at all listening levels.
Dual voice coil — what it means in practice
A dual voice coil subwoofer gives you options that a single coil driver simply can’t offer. If your amplifier is most efficient at 2 ohms, wire the XL-1040TD’s coils in parallel and let it work. If you’re running a bridged amplifier channel that’s happier with a higher load, wire in series at 8 ohms. You can even run each coil from a separate amplifier channel for a stereo-summed bass signal. This is exactly why experienced installers tend to prefer DVC drivers — they adapt to the system rather than forcing you to work around them.

XL-1040TD vs XL-1040T — which one do you need?
Both drivers share the same basket, cone, mounting depth, and power rating. The difference is purely in the voice coil:
| Model | Voice Coil | Wiring Options | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| XL-1040T | Single 4-ohm | 4Ω only | Simple installs; amp rated at 4Ω |
| XL-1040TD | Dual 4-ohm | 2Ω or 8Ω | Maximum flexibility; bridged or high-impedance amps |
