Not every vehicle has room for a 10″ or 12″ subwoofer — but that doesn’t mean settling for weak, vague bass. The PowerBass PBX1-8D2 is built for exactly this situation. At Safe and Sound, it’s the 8″ dual voice coil subwoofer we recommend when installation space is genuinely tight but audio quality isn’t negotiable. With 300W RMS, a rigid polycarbonate cone, dual 2-ohm voice coils, and the flexibility to run in sealed or ported enclosures, the PBX1-8D2 delivers punchy, accurate low-end in places a larger driver simply cannot reach.
Why choose the PowerBass PBX1-8D2?
The PBX-1 Series represents a new generation of PowerBass subwoofer engineering — a step up in cone technology, surround design, and thermal management compared with earlier budget-oriented 8″ drivers. The polycarbonate cone is stiffer and lighter than conventional pressed paper, which translates directly into faster, more accurate transient response. Pair that with multi-layer progressive spiders for precise cone control, a Parabolic Santoprene® Hybrid surround for long-excursion durability, and dual 2-ohm coils for serious wiring options, and you have a compact subwoofer that punches well above its size.
- Polycarbonate cone — stiff, light, accurate — polycarbonate resists flex under high excursion better than paper or polypropylene, so bass stays defined and articulate even when the volume goes up.
- Dual 2-ohm coils, two wiring options — wire in parallel for a 1Ω load to extract maximum current from a high-output mono amplifier, or wire in series for a stable 4Ω load on a bridged channel. A single driver, genuinely adaptable to your system.
- Sealed or ported enclosure compatibility — most 8″ subwoofers are optimised for one enclosure type. The PBX1-8D2 performs well in both, so your enclosure choice is driven by the space and sound character you want, not by driver limitations.
- Multi-layer progressive spiders — the layered spider assembly provides increasing resistance at higher excursion, protecting the voice coil and keeping cone movement controlled at the limits of its travel.
- Vented BASV voice coil former and aero-vent cooling — the combination of pole venting and perimeter aero-vents circulates air continuously over the voice coil, keeping temperatures down during prolonged high-output use.
- Non-resonant textured steel basket — the stamped and textured design keeps the basket rigid and quiet, so the only sound coming through is the bass you want.
Where the PBX1-8D2 belongs in a system
Eight-inch subwoofers earn their place in installs where physical space is the constraint — small hatchbacks and coupes with limited boot depth, under-seat locations in trucks and SUVs, motorcycle touring bags, or compact van builds where a larger enclosure simply isn’t possible. In those situations, the PBX1-8D2’s compact 7 1/8″ cutout diameter and 5.25″ mounting depth let you build a small but properly engineered enclosure, and the polycarbonate cone makes the most of the available cone area with tight, fast bass rather than the boomy, slow response that gives small subwoofers a bad name.
If you’re unsure whether a sealed or ported enclosure is right for your vehicle and listening preferences, the Safe and Sound team is happy to advise. Sealed boxes give tighter, more musical bass with a natural roll-off; ported enclosures extend the low-frequency output but need more careful tuning. We can help you choose — and if you’d like us to build the enclosure and handle the full installation, our workshop does exactly that.

PBX1-8D2 vs PBX1-8D4 — which impedance do you need?
The PBX-1 8″ subwoofer is available in two dual voice coil versions. Both share the same basket, cone, power rating, and build quality. The difference is the per-coil impedance — and therefore the final load options available to you:
| Model | Voice Coil | Wiring Options | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| PBX1-8D2 | Dual 2-ohm | 1Ω or 4Ω | High-current mono amps; maximum power extraction at 1Ω |
| PBX1-8D4 | Dual 4-ohm | 2Ω or 8Ω | Amplifiers rated at 2Ω; bridged channels preferring higher loads |
Not sure which version suits your amplifier? Check your amp’s stable impedance rating — or ask the Safe and Sound team and we’ll point you in the right direction before you order.
