The step up is S5, which adds automatic driver recognition — a tag or card that must be present when the vehicle is driven, so the system can report movement by someone who doesn’t have it. Insurers tend to specify S5 or S5 Plus on higher-value, high-performance and frequently targeted vehicles. The Protector Pro is an S7 device and does not include driver recognition.

How the Protector Pro Tracker Works

1. Installation. The unit is hardwired into your vehicle and concealed. Because it is wired in rather than plugged into a port, there is no obvious connector for a thief to find and remove.

2. Positioning. The device establishes its position using GPS and GLONASS satellites and sends that information over the GPRS/GSM mobile network. Its roaming SIM connects to whichever network is strongest rather than being locked to one provider, and works across Europe as well as the UK.

3. Everyday use. Nothing is required of you day to day. Open the Global Telemetrics app whenever you want to see where the vehicle currently is.

4. Alerts. This is where the Protector Pro does more than a basic tracker. It reports movement when the ignition hasn’t been used, so being towed or winched onto a trailer doesn’t go unnoticed. It supports multiple geofences, so you can be alerted when the vehicle leaves a defined area. It raises a tamper alert if the vehicle battery is disconnected or power to the device is cut, and it monitors voltage and ignition status, flagging a low main battery. Where an aftermarket alarm has been connected to the optional alarm input, the control centre is notified if that alarm sounds.

5. Monitoring centre response. Alerts go to the Global Telemetrics Secure Control Centre, staffed 24 hours a day. Their team makes contact to check whether the movement or alert is expected. If it isn’t, the recovery process begins straight away.

6. Recovery. You report the theft to the police and obtain a crime reference number. Global Telemetrics work with local and national police forces and, where a vehicle has left the country, with independent repatriation investigators who have local knowledge. Note that the Protector Pro does not offer remote immobilisation — recovery is coordinated through tracking and liaison, not by stopping the vehicle.

Monitoring is carried out in-house by Global Telemetrics, SmarTrack’s own Secure Control Centre, 24 hours a day across the UK and Europe. They handle theft reports, unauthorised movement alerts, geofence breaches, battery disconnection and tamper alerts, low battery warnings, and alarm notifications where an alarm has been connected. Following an alert, their team contacts you to establish whether the vehicle is safe, and where it isn’t, begins locating it and coordinating with the police.

App

The free Global Telemetrics app is available for Apple and Android devices and shows your vehicle’s up-to-date location along with your account details. On the Protector Pro Global specifically, SmarTrack notes that historical journey data is not available — the app shows where the vehicle is now, not a log of past trips.
