Thatcham Category S5 is the higher of the two current stolen vehicle tracking categories. What separates it from S7 is Automatic Driver Recognition: the system has to verify that an authorised driver is present, not just report where the vehicle is. That distinction is why insurers ask for S5 on vehicles targeted by relay attack and key cloning, where the thief has a working key and the vehicle appears to be driving away normally.

With the S5 D-ID PLUS, that verification comes from the D-iD app on your phone. If the vehicle moves and no authorised device is detected, the control centre is alerted immediately and begins working through its escalation procedure. An S7 tracker would report the movement but would have no way of knowing whether the person driving should be there.

This is the point that causes most confusion, so it is worth stating plainly: “S5 Plus” is not a Thatcham category. Thatcham certifies S5 and S7. The trade uses “S5 Plus” to describe an S5 device that also has remote immobilisation. Immobilisation is not part of the Thatcham S5 criteria and is not required to obtain your S5 certificate — it is an additional security feature on top of the certified S5 specification.

How the S5 D-ID PLUS Tracker Works

1. Covert installation. Your engineer fits the unit out of sight, wired into the vehicle away from the locations a thief would check first. Nothing is visible from inside the cabin. The immobilisation circuit is wired in at the same time.

2. Activation and commissioning. The tracker is brought live on the Global Telemetrics platform, your account is created and the D-iD app is installed and paired on your phone. Once commissioning is complete, your S5 certificate is issued.

3. Everyday driving. The tracker positions the vehicle using GPS and GLONASS and reports over the mobile network using a roaming SIM that hops between carriers. When you drive, the app confirms an authorised driver is present. You do nothing — no fob to remember, no button to press.

4. An unauthorised movement. If the vehicle moves without a recognised D-iD device, card or tag, an alert is raised immediately at the control centre. This is the scenario that matters most: a thief who has cloned or stolen your key still cannot produce your driver ID, so the alert fires anyway.

5. Tampering and towing. Disconnecting the vehicle battery does not silence the tracker — the internal backup battery keeps it live and the disconnection itself generates an alert. Low battery voltage is also reported, which is useful on vehicles left standing for long periods.

6. Confirmed theft and recovery. Once theft is confirmed, the control centre works with police and Global Telemetrics’ repatriation investigators to locate and recover the vehicle. Where police authorise it, control centre staff can remotely immobilise the vehicle to stop it being driven further. Immobilisation is never triggered by you or by the app — it is a control room function used under police direction, for obvious safety reasons.

Monitoring is provided by the Global Telemetrics Secure Control Centre, which operates 24 hours a day, every day, covering the UK and Europe. It is staffed rather than automated — when an alert comes in, a person works through it.

The alerts that reach them from an S5 D-ID PLUS include vehicle movement with no authorised driver detected, battery disconnection or tampering, and low battery voltage. On a driver recognition alert the centre will typically attempt to contact you first to establish whether the movement is legitimate, since a flat phone or an app that has been logged out can produce a genuine-looking alert.

If the theft is confirmed, the centre coordinates with local and national police forces and can call on independent repatriation investigators where a vehicle has been moved abroad. Remote immobilisation sits in this stage of the process and is applied at police request.

App

The free Global Telemetrics app performs two jobs on this system. It acts as your driver ID through the D-iD function, and it gives you visibility of the vehicle. Verified functions include:

Subscriptions are paid directly to SmarTrack rather than to Safe & Sound Mobile, and the plan is set up after your installation is complete. Renewal is required at the end of the term you choose, unless you take the duration of ownership option.

Over three years the up-front plan works out considerably cheaper than monthly direct debit, and the duration of ownership option makes sense if you tend to keep vehicles for a long time. If you sell the vehicle, the tracker can be transferred to your next one, though fitting fees apply.
