The fleet management tracker
If you have been researching Smartrack S7 trackers, you have probably come across three names: the Reco S7, the Protector Pro, and the Trident. The Reco and the Protector Pro get most of the attention. The Trident is quieter — but for businesses running more than one vehicle, it is almost certainly the most useful product in the entire Smartrack range.
The reason it gets overlooked is simple. Most tracker content focuses on stolen vehicle recovery for private car owners. The Trident does that too — but it also includes a full fleet management web portal that lets you monitor every registered vehicle from a single dashboard, review complete journey histories, log private versus business mileage, and set geofence zones around your depot, yard or job sites.
For a sole trader with two vans, a small business with five vehicles, or a fleet manager responsible for a mixed commercial fleet, the Trident delivers capabilities that would normally require a dedicated fleet telematics subscription at significantly higher cost.
This guide covers everything the Trident does, how it compares to the other S7 options, and who it is genuinely built for.
What is the Smartrack Trident S7?
The Smartrack Trident is a Thatcham Category S7-approved GPS tracking system. Like all S7 trackers, it provides 24/7 monitoring by the Global Telemetrics Secure Control Centre, dual-satellite GPS and GLONASS positioning, motion-sensing alerts, battery-disconnection alerts, and an internal backup battery that keeps the tracker transmitting even if the main vehicle power is cut.
It is fully insurance-approved, compatible with all vehicle types, including cars, vans, HGVs, motorhomes, and plant machinery, and installed by Thatcham-approved engineers at your home or workplace.
Where it differs from the Reco S7 and Protector Pro is what sits on top of the standard S7 foundation. The Trident includes full web portal access — a dedicated online account that provides fleet operators with visibility and reporting not available in other S7 products.
The Trident fleet portal: what it actually gives you
Live multi-vehicle monitoring
The Trident web portal lets you view the live locations of all registered vehicles simultaneously on a single map. If you have five vans out on jobs, you can see all five in real time from your desktop, laptop, or phone.
This is useful in ways beyond theft protection. Knowing where your vehicles are at any given moment helps you respond to customer queries, redirect a driver to an urgent job, or confirm that a vehicle is where it should be at the end of the working day.
Complete journey history
Every journey made by every registered vehicle is logged automatically. You can review any journey by date, time, route, distance, and duration. The history is stored and searchable, meaning you can go back weeks or months to review vehicle activity if needed.
For businesses, this is valuable for several reasons. If a customer disputes a delivery or service visit, you have GPS-verified proof of the exact times your vehicle arrived and departed. If a vehicle is involved in an incident, you have a complete record of its route. If an employee claims to have been at a specific location, the journey history confirms it.
Private versus business mileage logging
For any business where vehicles are also used for personal journeys — a company van that an employee takes home, or a director’s car used for both work and personal travel — the Trident portal allows you to flag journeys as private or business and generate mileage reports accordingly.
This simplifies the calculation of benefit-in-kind tax on private vehicle use and provides clear documentation for HMRC, if required. For sole traders reclaiming vehicle costs as a business expense, it provides an accurate, automatically generated mileage log rather than a manual record kept in a notebook.

Geofence zones and alerts
You can set geofence boundaries around any address or area — your depot, a regular job site, a customer’s premises, or a restricted zone where vehicles should not enter or leave outside of working hours. When a vehicle crosses a geofence boundary, you receive an instant alert.
For fleet managers, this provides a lightweight form of vehicle monitoring without requiring you to continuously watch the live map. If a van leaves the depot at 11 pm on a Sunday, you know about it immediately.
Speed alerts
The Trident portal supports speed threshold alerts — configurable notifications that fire when a vehicle exceeds a defined speed. This is useful for businesses where driver behaviour is a concern, for young or inexperienced drivers, or simply for monitoring compliance with site speed limits.
Trident vs Reco S7 vs Protector Pro: how they compare
All three are Thatcham S7-approved and provide the same core stolen-vehicle recovery capability. The differences are in what lies beyond the basics.

Who the Trident is built for
Sole traders and tradespeople with more than one vehicle
If you run two or more vans, the Trident portal pays for itself quickly. The ability to view all vehicles on a single screen, review journey histories, and automatically log mileage replaces spreadsheets, manual records, and guesswork. For a one- or two-person business, this level of oversight used to require a dedicated fleet-tracking subscription. The Trident is included.
Small businesses managing a mixed fleet.
A small business running a combination of cars, vans and larger vehicles across multiple drivers faces a genuine management challenge. The Trident portal handles mixed fleets without any additional configuration — each vehicle appears on the same dashboard regardless of type, and each driver’s journeys are logged separately.

Fleet managers who need reporting capability
For businesses that need to demonstrate vehicle usage to directors, justify costs to accountants, or provide mileage records to HMRC, the Trident’s journey history and mileage logging features provide clean, automatically generated documentation. This saves time and removes the risk of incomplete or disputed manual records.
Directors and business owners with a company vehicle
A director using a company car for both business and personal travel has a genuine reporting obligation. The Trident’s private-versus-business mileage feature handles this automatically, generating the documentation needed for benefit-in-kind calculations with no additional effort.
What about the subscription?
The Trident uses the same Global Telemetrics subscription structure as other Smartrack S7 products. Plans range from a monthly direct debit of £17.49 to a duration-of-ownership plan at £749. For businesses managing multiple vehicles, each vehicle requires its own subscription — but all vehicles can be monitored from the same portal account.
For a full breakdown of all subscription plans and which offer the best value based on how long you plan to keep each vehicle, see our Smartrack subscription costs guide.

Installation
The Trident is installed by Thatcham-approved Safe & Sound Mobile engineers at your home, depot, or workplace — anywhere across the UK mainland. Installation takes 60 to 90 minutes per vehicle. For businesses fitting multiple vehicles, we can schedule consecutive installations to minimise disruption to your working day.
Once installed and commissioned, the web portal account is set up, and you can begin monitoring immediately. The engineer will confirm the device is transmitting correctly before leaving.
Frequently asked questions
How many vehicles can I monitor from one Trident portal account?
There is no fixed limit on the number of vehicles you can add to a single portal account. Each vehicle requires its own Trident device and active subscription, but all appear under the same login for monitoring and reporting.
Can I use the Trident on a motorcycle or plant machinery?
Yes. The Trident is compatible with all vehicle types, including motorcycles, vans, HGVs, and plant machinery. Speak to Safe & Sound Mobile before ordering if you have an unusual vehicle type, and we will confirm the correct installation configuration.
Is the journey history stored securely?
Yes. Journey data is stored on the Global Telemetrics secure platform. You access it through your password-protected web portal account. Data is not shared with third parties without your consent.
Does the Trident include driver recognition like the S5?
No. The Trident is an S7 product and does not include ADR. If your insurer requires S5 with driver recognition, you will need one of the Smartrack S5 variants instead. See our S5 driver recognition guide for a full breakdown of the available options.
