SmarTrack S7 Tracker Category and Insurance Requirements

Thatcham Research publishes the standards UK insurers use to classify aftermarket vehicle security. For stolen vehicle tracking there are two current categories. S7 covers monitored tracking systems that report a vehicle’s position to a control centre. S5 covers everything S7 does and adds a mandatory driver recognition element, so the system can also verify whether an authorised driver is present.

S7 is the category insurers most commonly specify for caravans, motorhomes, trailers, plant, agricultural equipment and standard-value vehicles. It is generally what a policy means when it asks for a “Thatcham approved tracker” without naming a category. S5 tends to be reserved for higher-value cars and vehicles at the greatest risk of targeted, organised theft.

SmarTrack list the Wireless device with Thatcham S7 accreditation, and it is monitored 24/7 by their in-house Global Telemetrics Secure Control Centre — the monitored element being central to what S7 requires. It has no driver recognition function, so it is not an S5 device and should not be ordered where S5 has been specified.

How the SmarTrack S7 Wireless Tracker Works

Installation. Because there is nothing to wire in, fitting is a question of siting rather than electrics. Our engineer selects a concealed position on or inside the vehicle, trailer or machine — somewhere the unit is protected from the weather, out of sight, and where the GPS signal is not obstructed by metal above it. The unit is then secured in place and activated.

Everyday operation. The tracker runs on its own internal battery and reports its position on a set schedule. The default configuration of one GPS call per day is what gives the device up to three years of life; the call-in frequency can be adjusted, though reporting more often will shorten battery life accordingly. In normal use you do nothing at all — the unit simply sits there and reports.

Anti-tamper detection. The unit carries a light sensor. If it is lifted, opened, or its mounting position is disturbed so that light reaches it after being installed in a dark location, it immediately generates an alert. That notification goes both to your app and to the Global Telemetrics monitoring centre, so interference is flagged even if nothing has moved yet.

If an asset is stolen. You report the theft to the police and to Global Telemetrics. The Secure Control Centre uses the device’s positioning to help establish where the asset is, working alongside local and national police forces. Where a stolen item has been moved abroad, Global Telemetrics can call on a network of independent repatriation investigators with local knowledge in that country.

Ongoing management. You can check the current location yourself at any time through the free Global Telemetrics app. Because the device is fully transferable, it can also be removed and refitted to a different vehicle, trailer or machine later on — useful if you rotate equipment or sell an asset and keep the tracker.

Monitoring, App and Subscription

Monitoring

Monitoring is handled by Global Telemetrics, SmarTrack’s own in-house Secure Control Centre, staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Coverage runs across the UK and Europe, and the unit carries a multi-network roaming SIM so it connects through whichever network is strongest at its location rather than being tied to one operator.

The alert the control centre acts on for this device is the anti-tamper light sensor trigger, indicating the unit has been disturbed or removed. On receiving an alert, staff make contact to establish whether the asset is safe. Where a theft is confirmed, the centre supports the police investigation with positioning data and can involve the repatriation network to assist recovery.

App

The free Global Telemetrics app for Apple and Android shows you up-to-date location information for your tracked asset, so you can check on a caravan in storage or a trailer left on site without travelling to it. You will also receive push notifications for anti-tamper alerts.

Be aware that SmarTrack describe app functionality on the wireless device as limited compared with their hardwired products, and their published comparison shows no historical data for the wireless unit. You get current position and alerts rather than a full journey log. If detailed route history, multiple geofences and reporting matter to you, a hardwired device such as the SmarTrack Trident S7 offers the full online account instead.

Subscription

A subscription is required for the tracking and monitoring service to operate, and it is not included in this listing, which covers the device and professional installation only.
