Viper 5104V Security Level and Insurance Requirements

We want to be straight with you here, because this is where people most often buy the wrong thing. The Viper 5104V gives you real, useful protection: perimeter monitoring, shock detection, a loud six-tone siren and a starter kill that stops the engine being cranked while the system is armed. What it does not have is a verified Thatcham category.

Thatcham categories are the shorthand UK insurers use. Category 1 means a combined alarm and immobiliser tested to a defined standard; Category 2 covers immobilisers; S5 and S7 cover tracking systems. An insurer asking for one of those is asking for a specific certified product, and an uncertified alarm will not satisfy that condition regardless of how well it performs.

If there is no condition on your policy and you simply want a well-specified alarm with remote start on top, the 5104V does exactly that job.

How the Viper 5104V Works

Installation. The control module, siren and Control Centre are fitted discreetly and wired into the vehicle. Where the car needs it, our engineer uses a D2D or XpressPort interface module so the system talks to the vehicle’s own electronics properly rather than being spliced in crudely.

Arming and disarming. You lock and arm from either 5-button remote. Doors, bonnet and boot are monitored, and the progressive door trigger means the system reacts as soon as a door is opened. Silent mode is available if you would rather not chirp at night.

If something happens. A light knock produces a Warn-Away chirp — a brief, low-volume warning that tells someone leaning on the car to move along. A genuine impact or an opened door triggers the full six-tone siren. NPC software is there to keep passing lorries and slammed doors from setting it off unnecessarily.

Remote start. Press the start sequence and the engine fires so the heater or air conditioning can work on the cabin before you get in. Virtual Tach means the system reads engine RPM without a dedicated tacho wire, and Timer Start, Smart Start and RunTime Reset give you control over how and when it runs.

What it does not do. The 5104V is 1-way, so the remotes send commands but do not report back to you. There is no GPS, no journey history, no phone alerts and no monitoring centre. If you want to know where your vehicle is, you need a tracker alongside it.

The Remotes

You get two slim 5-button SuperCode remotes. Viper quotes a range of up to 2,000 feet, though real-world range always depends on buildings, terrain and interference. SuperCode uses software-based signal encryption in place of older hardware code-hopping, and supports two-car operation, so one remote can control a second compatible Viper system if you have one fitted to another vehicle. Note that this is the 1-way version of the platform: the remotes command the car but do not display confirmation back to you.

Smartphone Control

Viper lists the 5104V as SmartStart compatible, meaning phone control can be added using a separate SmartStart module. Adding a VSM250 module also makes the system SmartStart GPS ready. Ongoing Costs
