SmarTrack S7 Tracker Category and Insurance Requirements

Thatcham Research publishes the standards UK insurers use to classify aftermarket vehicle security. For stolen vehicle tracking there are two current categories. S7 covers monitored tracking systems that report a vehicle’s position to a control centre. S5 covers everything S7 does and adds a mandatory driver recognition element, so the system can also verify whether an authorised driver is present.

S7 is the category almost universally specified for caravans, and for good reason — driver recognition has limited meaning on a vehicle that is towed rather than driven. It is what the great majority of caravan policies mean when they ask for a “Thatcham approved tracker”. You may still encounter older wording referring to Category 6 or “Cat 6”; that classification was superseded by S7, so a Cat 6 requirement is generally satisfied by an S7 device, though it is worth having your insurer confirm that in writing.

How the SmarTrack Caravan Tracking System Works

Installation. Our engineer wires the unit into your caravan’s 12V electrical system and conceals it. Placement takes some thought on a caravan — the unit needs to be hidden well away from the obvious places a thief would check, protected from damp, and still able to receive a clear satellite signal through a body largely made of aluminium and GRP.

While the caravan is parked. This is where the system does most of its work. It reports position continuously, so you can open the app at any point over the winter and confirm your caravan is exactly where you left it. You can also set geofences around your storage site or driveway, so any departure from that boundary generates an alert automatically.

If the caravan is moved. If it moves without the ignition being operated — hitched to a strange vehicle and towed off a storage yard, for example — the tracker flags it and the Global Telemetrics Secure Control Centre is alerted. Staff contact you to establish whether the movement was authorised. That single alert is the difference between discovering a theft within minutes and discovering it at Easter.

Confirmed theft. If you confirm the caravan has been taken, the control centre works with the police using live positioning to help locate it. Where a caravan has been moved abroad — a common outcome with stolen touring vans — Global Telemetrics can call on a network of independent repatriation investigators with local knowledge in that country.

Power and tampering. The unit has an internal backup battery, so disconnecting the caravan’s battery does not silence it, and that disconnection itself generates an alert. It also monitors battery voltage, which has a practical benefit beyond security: you will be told your leisure battery is going flat while the caravan is in storage, rather than finding out at the start of the season.

Alarm integration. If you have an aftermarket caravan alarm, it can be connected to the tracker so that Global Telemetrics are contacted when it sounds. Coverage runs across the UK and Europe — relevant if you tour on the continent — and the device carries a multi-network roaming SIM so it connects through whichever network is strongest rather than being tied to a single operator.

Alerts the control centre acts on include movement without the ignition being used, geofence breaches, battery disconnection and anti-tamper events, low battery voltage, and an aftermarket alarm sounding where one has been connected. In each case the team contacts you first to establish whether the caravan is safe. Where a theft is confirmed, they liaise with local and national police forces and can involve the repatriation network to assist recovery.

App

The free Global Telemetrics app for Apple and Android gives you up-to-date location information for your caravan at any time — which for most owners is the feature they end up using most, simply for the reassurance of checking on a van in storage without driving to it.
