Shadow Immobiliser Security Category and Insurance Requirements

The Shadow Immobiliser is an aftermarket immobiliser, not a tracking device, so the Thatcham S-categories that apply to trackers do not apply here. S5, S5 Plus and S7 all describe stolen vehicle tracking and recovery systems that report a vehicle’s location to a control centre. The Shadow Immobiliser does a different job: it prevents the engine being started in the first place.

Global Telemetrics does not publish a Thatcham category for the Shadow Immobiliser. How the Shadow Immobiliser Works

1. Covert installation. Your engineer wires the Shadow Immobiliser into the vehicle out of sight, with no visible indicator lights and no receiver on the dashboard. There is no external sign the system is fitted, which means a thief who gets into the vehicle has no clue why it will not start or what they are looking for.

2. Automatic arming. Every time you switch the ignition off, the system arms itself within about 90 seconds. You do not press anything or remember a sequence. Protection is applied whether you are stopping for two minutes or leaving the vehicle overnight.

3. Driver recognition. To start the vehicle, a charged and switched-on Shadow Driver Detection Card or tag needs to be inside the vehicle or immediately beside it. The system recognises the card, releases the immobilisation and the vehicle starts as normal. The exact detection distance varies with the vehicle and where the unit has been installed.

4. What a thief faces. Because immobilisation is tied to the card rather than the key, a stolen key, a cloned key or a relayed keyless signal is not enough. The engine stays immobilised. This is what makes the Shadow Immobiliser effective against the relay and key-cloning methods used on modern vehicles.

5. Servicing and lending the vehicle. When the vehicle needs to go to a garage, be valeted or be moved by someone without a card, you switch on Service Mode in the Shadow app. The vehicle then starts without a card until you turn Service Mode off again. 6. If the worst happens. The Shadow Immobiliser is a prevention device and does not provide police-liaison stolen vehicle recovery in the way an approved tracker does. The standard Shadow Immobiliser is not connected to a 24/7 stolen vehicle monitoring centre and does not generate theft alerts to a control room in the way an S5 or S7 tracker does. Its security comes from preventing the engine from starting, which happens at the vehicle without needing anyone to be watching a screen.

Global Telemetrics, which manufactures the Shadow Immobiliser, does operate a secure control centre for its tracking products and states that its team may be able to assist in a theft situation using the device’s connected services. That is assistance rather than a monitored recovery service, and we would not want you to buy this product expecting the latter. The Shadow app is built around control rather than tracking. From it you can:

There is no subscription and no ongoing fee with the standard Shadow Immobiliser.
