If you want accurate, punchy bass from a compact 8″ subwoofer and you want the wiring to work cleanly with virtually any mono or bridged amplifier on the market, the PowerBass PBX1-8D4 is where to start. At Safe and Sound, it’s the version of the PBX-1 8″ we recommend most often — because dual 4-ohm coils, wiring to 2Ω or 8Ω, suit the widest range of amplifier configurations without any compromise to the driver itself. Same polycarbonate cone, same 300W RMS, same compact footprint as the D2. Just a more universally compatible impedance.
Why choose the PowerBass PBX1-8D4?
The PBX-1 Series is PowerBass’s latest generation of subwoofer engineering — built around a polycarbonate cone that outperforms conventional pressed paper for stiffness, excursion control, and transient accuracy. The PBX1-8D4 takes that platform and pairs it with dual 4-ohm voice coils: the configuration that most mono amplifiers are designed to handle at their most efficient and reliable operating point. Wire in parallel at 2Ω to unlock maximum wattage from a high-current amp; wire in series at 8Ω if your amplifier is bridged or prefers a higher impedance load. Either way, you’re working with the amplifier rather than against it.
- Dual 4-ohm coils — the most versatile DVC configuration — 2Ω parallel suits virtually every mono subwoofer amplifier on the market; 8Ω series is ideal for bridged stereo channels and high-impedance designs. One subwoofer, maximum amplifier compatibility.
- Polycarbonate cone, fast and accurate — stiffer and lighter than paper or polypropylene, the polycarbonate cone responds quickly to the amplifier signal and recovers cleanly between bass notes, giving you definition rather than blur.
- Parabolic Santoprene® Hybrid surround — the parabolic profile controls cone excursion more precisely than a standard half-roll surround, keeping the cone geometry stable at higher output levels for lower distortion.
- Multi-layer progressive spiders — the layered assembly increases restoring force progressively as excursion grows, protecting the voice coil at the limits of travel and extending the driver’s working life.
- Vented BASV former and aero-vent cooling — perimeter and pole venting circulates air continuously over the voice coil, managing heat at sustained power levels without thermal compression.
- Non-resonant textured steel basket — stamped and textured for rigidity without added mass, keeping the basket quiet and the driver focused on reproducing bass rather than adding its own colouration.
Sealed or ported — and why it matters with this driver
The PBX1-8D4 is genuinely optimised for both sealed and ported enclosures, which is rarer than it sounds — most small subwoofers favour one or the other. In a sealed box, the driver produces tight, musical bass with a gentle roll-off, making it ideal for listeners who prioritise accuracy and punch over raw extension. In a ported enclosure, tuned correctly, it extends low-frequency output further and produces a bigger, more room-filling sound at the cost of a little transient speed.
If you’re not sure which suits your vehicle or your listening habits, the Safe and Sound team can walk you through the trade-offs before you build or buy a box. And if you’d prefer a complete installation — custom enclosure, amplifier wiring, and a final tune — our workshop handles the whole job so everything works together from day one.

PBX1-8D4 vs PBX1-8D2 — which impedance suits your amplifier?
Both drivers are identical in construction, power handling, and physical dimensions. The choice comes down entirely to how you plan to wire the subwoofer to your amplifier:
| Model | Voice Coil | Wiring Options | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| PBX1-8D4 | Dual 4-ohm | 2Ω or 8Ω | Most mono amps at 2Ω; bridged channels and high-impedance designs at 8Ω |
| PBX1-8D2 | Dual 2-ohm | 1Ω or 4Ω | High-current mono amps stable at 1Ω; standard 4Ω single-coil replacement |
If you’re unsure which version matches your amplifier, check the amp’s minimum stable impedance — or drop the Safe and Sound team a message and we’ll advise before you order.
